I have had both C. canescens and C. verticillata in a pot with lots of rocks, permatil, etc. My first C. verticillata died due to too much moisture...I did not have enough permatil in the pot, I think. A friend gave me cuttings, however, and one is growing in the amended soil mixture. I am also trying it in a very dry location out in the yard. The C. canescens is four years old now.

At the NC Botanical Garden they have a lovely spread of Conradina. The plant appears NOT to be able to take soggy soils and is better suited to a rock garden or very dry locale.

Oh, I don't think you are really supposed to eat it.

Thanks for the info, ncrescue. Is it hardy enough to keep outside in a comtainer, or do you bring it in during the winter?

Said plants have been outside; I do not bring in. We had short periods of very cold weather all of the four winters I have had the plants. This prolonged cold now will probably be another test, but so far, so good outside.

I believe that Conradina canescens is indeed edible. In fact, my grandmother used it for seasoning many years ago.

Interesting that this is reappearing after four years. My C. canescens is still going outdoors, but the two very large C. verticillatas had a hard winter. One died, and the other has only a few pieces left after growing to two feet diameter. I am sure it was the excessive winter moisture, in spite of being on a slope in sandy soil. I just purchased a new one and planted today. I will have to remember to make sure the leaves don't pile up on it during the winter. Still have never heard about eating it, acmuse2, although it smells so good!
