Sizing and color of sofa (revisited)

I'm wanting to slipcover this large green sofa in a warm-natural colored fabric but am concerned that it would look too big in a light color. It faces a light beige loveseat. Total living/dining space is 22' X 12'; living area part from back of sofa is 13' X 12'. The front door entry area (just to the left of where the stairs are as you look into the room) is an addition space of about 6' X 7" Any suggestions-- what should I do with this sofa: downsize to something smaller, change color to something lighter? Any other suggestions? Here are a couple pics of my current space.

It appears the other sofa in the room is a more contemporary design. Could you purchase another sofa like the beige one? The lines are cleaner and more sleek. Would look great with your existing coffee table. Also consider a soft gray on the walls.

My decorator mother-in-law gave me a great piece of advice years ago when we were trying to decide on the color of our first furniture purchase, a leather sofa. Pick a color from your flooring...a British Tan or caramel color will help with the size issue of your sofa in that room.

Here is what I suggest....a few things. If you want a neutral sofa color...you really should consider window treatments with color and pattern...you don't want your room to become dull and bland. And of course some throw pillows. Your other sofa in the space is too large. I'm not sure if there is just a corner by that sofa or if something is back there. If it is a corner you could get to small scaled side chairs or a chair 1/2. Your rug is also too small for your space....this is another place where you can add a pop of color or pattern.

    Hello,

Slipcovers are a great idea, as marcaro1 suggests, but good ones that are custom made can be just as expensive as buying a new sofa. My first suggestion would be to replace the rolled arm sofa with one that compliments the love seat. ( one with similar lines and fabric ) Then you can create some visual "oomph" with a great patterned rug in your favorite colors, ( you need at least a 5x8 or bigger! furniture feet on the rug) coordinating pillows, ( 21" square down filled always look great) and draperies to "finish" the room. If you wanted to take it a step further, you can also replace the cocktail table with a round one, preferably not wood since you already have quite a few wood pieces in the room, and round to downplay all of the corners in the room. I also see three nice pieces of art hanging on separate walls; try grouping them together on one wall to create a more cohesive look.

    Big question, is budget.
Next question, what is your lifestyle decor choice.

I agree with Stanton & AJD on many things including the rug, I'm so sorry.

I say I'm sorry, because 2 things,1. rugs are expensive & 2. they can be very tricky. There is no way to hide a "cheap and nasty rug" and it can make a whole room seem very tacky with a blink of an eye. I personally do not have the rug of my dreams because I refuse to spend money on a rug that isn't "drop to my knees fabulous", while I still have children charging & a husband charging thru. In addition the fabulous patterned rugs that I love can cost $$$. The look of sisal or a natural fiber, is just a classic. They can be tough underfoot and can be a pain to keep looking good, but I love them and have them in my home. Another option if you are concerned about budget is to have a carpet cut and bound.

Again if budget is an issue (an who doesn't want to be careful these day) and the sofa is still comfy, I'd keep it. Let's be honest everyone, lies down to watch TV. As mentioned above, think about moving the other sofa to a new venue in the home and putting a chair and ottoman in its place. I have a small crush on small (I'm short) upholstered swivel chairs in a spot like that 1. to turn and look out the window, with a cup of tea 2. it looks like it's in a traffic zone, so it can easily move with the flow without someone whacking their shin 3. it's easy for conversation and TV watching 4. they easily amuse guests and children ;-). While an ottoman allows for extra seating. Keep checking garage sales, secondhand stores for a bargain that you can have reupholstered. Calico corners sells (and will then upholster it in one of their fabrics) them too, as do many other online places.

Love the idea of AJD about, scaling back on all the natural wood, as well as changing out the coffee table. Maybe 2 small x stools,
http://stylecarrot.com/2009/10/12/get-the-look-x-stools/, can do double duty as coffee table/cocktail seating?

When it comes to curtaining......stop and breathe, anything with color or pattern is going to narrow your future choices, which is ok, if you know which colors you absolutely love. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE COLOR, but I dislike old trends, so try find something that won't date room quickly. Don't forget that there is a lot to be said for texture too.

This is fun and lucky you! You have 3 designers each giving you our 2 cents.

I would love to know what you decide.

HI -- Do you need or want to keep that big green sofa ? I would say to get a smaller more basic style one or just get two tailored lounge chairs that will go with the love seat. You won't want slipcovers , they are a pain and exspensive for a sofa I think is too big for your room anyway. You have a such a teeny -tiny wood stove , maybe , if you can some day have a more real looking fireplace. Not a fan of furniture pieces angled in corners - is that a TV cabinet ? If you do a fireplace then maybe a flat screen can go above -but only because of small room. And you could use some drapes or romans for the windows . And a bigger area rug so all the livingroom furniture can sit on it -but no rug in dining area. The screen in the dining room does not suit the room . Maybe ,for somewhere else in the house ?

I have gotten so many wonder responses to my design dilemma. Thank you all. Lots to think about. I really don't have much of a budget, maybe $500. There is no other room to put the loveseat in, so I will probably keep the big sofa for now and maybe spend by time and money finding a larger rug and some curtains with color or texture for the far wall and maybe have them extend over all three windows. I do have neutral color blinds on those windows for privacy. I also like the idea of grouping my paintings instead of one to a wall. The screen in the back corner of the dining room hides my art "studio," really just my easel and the painting I'm working on currently. I've wanted to change the coffee table for awhile but cannot find an affordable, quality one that I like. Definitely like the idea of two ottomans that could be used as seating or as tables. Yes, that's a TV cabinet and it will have to stay for now. It houses my TV and my stereo and vinyl collection; I like the height and the fact that it can be closed and hide what's inside.
