Well, you guys were right.

I noticed yesterday that my Purple Spider that died and got cut to the ground is pushing up some green, beautiful new growth. I was a little worried since it was a type 1, no prune variety. I've decided that no clematis can be considered dead until it doesn't show up for longer than two years :-)

I have hard pruned all of my type I's with no losses.

I have armandii 'Appleblossom', cartmanii 'Avalanche', alpina 'Helsingborg', alpina 'Tage Lundell' and macropetala 'Bluebird'

I gave macropetala 'Rosy O'Grady' away and saw her yesterday and she survived the whacking to 6" from 10' that had never been pruned, digging up, potting and sitting in a pot for over a month before finally going to a new home and being planted out in August after being pruned and dug up in July.

They just aren't as fragile as we think they are..... :)

BorS, I think you are absolutely right. If you plant them correctly and keep them watered they seem to be able to bounce back from most anything.
