Harry, quite a few clematis will rebloom in the same year--types I, II, and III. The type IIIs are typically the ones that rebloom the most frequently in my garden. This is the case for some regardless of whether I prune them after their first flush or not. This year I am allowing most of my type IIIs to continue growing without pruning back because I am collecting seed and I am still seeing rebloom on these that weren't pruned back. I do however seem to see more blooms on those that I whack back after blooming than those that I allow to stay as is.

The weather this year may also be a factor in some clematis reblooming. After the long hot and dry summer we have had, some clematis may be responding to the little rain we got and the cooler temps. and think it is spring again.

No one can say what your clematis may do next year. Time will tell. However, according to COTW, your clematis can be treated as a type II or III. If you don't cut the plant back like you normally should for a type III this winter/spring, then you should get a flush of flowers much earlier than if you treated it as a type III. Then after its earlier flowering, you could trim the plant back, fertilize it and keep it watered well, and you might get another large flush of flowers when it normally blooms or a little later.

Harry, in the book that I just got about clematis by John Howells, he says that Gipsy Queen is outstanding for ease of cultivation and continuous free flowering.

I am curious Harry..did you see the rebloom on just the top of Clematis "Gipsy Queen" or both the new and old vines?..Many tout it as a Pruning group 3..ie blooming on the new wood..I would be curious as to your evaluation?...Jeanne
