Bob, thank you for sharing this photo. They are absolutely gorgeous. Would 30" be the closest that I could plant them together? Do you think that I could push it to 24" as I have only a 5 foot space and love the idea of mixing 3 together rather than 2.

I planted mine 2 feet/24 inches apart..remember to keep same pruning groups together..makes pruning time so much easier...Jeanne

I would try it. If the roots have room to grow outside a limited space I think that enough room.

My first year with Clematis
I planted 3 varieties near this trellis
On the left is Comptess de Bouchard, first to flower
In centre is Viola a very vigorous vine, lovely semi nodding flowers appear from a distant brighter than at close up, this is overpowering CdB I will need to move the plants around come winter -- not sure how just yet

On the right is Polish Spirit, just taking up the challenge of Viola, now many more flowers than when this pic was taken

The pink plant on the hoops is 'Alionushka'

Mr and Ms bBackbird are just not interested in Clematis

This year I have quite a few clems, but many of the ones with roots strong enough to go right into the ground are going to go in places where there is competition from stronger roots, such as a very large lilac clump, or in places with extremely rocky soil.

So I have decided to try putting some of them above ground in 24" or so across pots that trees must have been sold in (got at yard sales). There seems to be room for 2 with 2 or more year old roots plus a newer one in a gallon pot. I may have to take something out next spring if it gets to be too much, assuming they survive the winter. I plan to surround the pots with cardboard boxes & fill in with tree leaves as they fall. My cats take care of rodents, so I don't think it will be necessary to wait until the ground freezes to mulch.

I have a number of my clematis planted 18" apart. They are kept well watered for the most part, and with adequate nutrition.
