I read that Psilotum is an epyphyte that is sometimes grown terestirally in rock crevices and sandy soil, which tells me that you should probably go with sandy soil.

It is an interesting plant. I have a plant that is
growing in a sandy type of mix but I really do not know
what is right as far as watering, light, temps, humidity.
I am experimenting as my plant seems to be in a decline. so I have stuck some into a covered bowl with soil and hope to see it survive with the higher humidity than with the current 70% I can provide in my greenhouse. I will continue to try as I find this whisk broom quite interesting and I do want to be able to grow it well.

It's actually a fairly weedy plant once you get it established. It doesn't seem to be too particular about soil, either; it'll grow in normal potting soil, come up out of pea gravel, etc. Likes high light and a fair amount of water...

If are make soil mix for Psilotum what materials would you use? Gravel, lava rock, peat moss, vermilite? What is well drained soil.?

The species is an epiphyte. I finally got it growing well until I watered it with tap water!!

Definitely needs distilled or r/o water to grow. Well drained soil could mean anything.

But for this plant I would try stratifying the soil: that is, have layers of different grades of soil. Presuming a 4 inch pot I would fill the bottom inch of the pot with lava rock; cover it with a piece of felt cut to fit; then a 1-1/2 inch layer of a commercial cactus mix that is mixed with peat moss at 1 cup mix to 1/4 cup peat moss; then an inch of a sand and peat moss mix with 1 cup of sand to 1/3 cup peat moss. Water it well with distilled or r/o water til it drains out before planting. Plant the psilotum and keep in a warm and humid place with

moderate light, around 2000 footcandles. You may want to experiment some on the light exposure but definitely use only distilled or r/o water. Good luck.
