Ken, it's the best way to write it as Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph', because if you will use the var. latifolia part, you also have to use the natural variety names for some other conifers as well:
Like Pinus mugo var. rostrata ''Fastigiata'

Pinus mugo var. pumilio 'Ophir'

Pinus mugo var. mughus 'Zundert'

The Dutch folks will pronounce the W as a W, weetjewel ;0)

well.. to my eye.. this looks German .. and they use the Vee ...

so you did get to the root of the issue.. its a dutch name ... not german ... so a W .... cool

Anymore my easiest and probably most correct solution(in terms of percentage of the time he's correct) is to simply go to Edwin's conifer 'assortium'.

I know of no one else in the conifer industry do obsessed with correct naming/history/punctuation for all conifer cultivars and his list covers about 3/4's of all of the plants I label.

On another note, are these newer plants Ken? A lot of them are recent introductions and if you have older plants I would absolutely LOVE to see a few dozen photos.

Ken, I know this is an 8 year old post of yours but may I ask how some of the Abies on this list held up over the years? In particular the Abies veitchii and Abies procera. Im in a suburban south MI climate so not too dissimilar from yours. I have clay soil so plant most on a mound of sandy topsoil. I would like to try the Hupp's snake but fear it would not survive long term. I planted a Abies veitchii 'Pendula' on a site with good drainage yet it surrendered in short order. It has left me to wonder if its worth given another one a second try.

Thank you that is good to know! Yes I have little bit of a suburban microclimate and slightly milder winter from proximity to the great lakes. Still I think I better not throw any more $ at another veitchii.
