Root disturbance with Dahlias

After starting off single tubers in small-ish pots, it's not long before roots start to poke though the bottom. When I transplant them, although they get watered beforehand, the roots are sometimes insufficient to hold the compost completely together.
So when I invert the pot and give it a tap, the bottom third of compost can sometimes stay in the bottom, leaving the roots hanging in mid-air. Do Dahlias dislike root disturbance, and can suffer any setback as a result?

It takes a week or two for the transplanted dahlia to get its roots back in order, and start growing up again.

I'm starting to think that tubers with 3-4 inch sprouts and short roots are probably the ideal to plant, as ones started early indoors can have various problems not encountered by the later-started tubers.

I disrupted some of the pot-tubers when I transplanted, didn't seem to really set them back as long as they got enough water and I didn't do it during a hot spell. There's only been 1-2 that seem to be kind of struggling/stopped for now out of the 12 I have in the ground so far. Have to finish the rest this wkd!

I disrupted some of the pot-tubers when I transplanted, didn't seem to really set them back as long as they got enough water and I didn't do it during a hot spell. There's only been 1-2 that seem to be kind of struggling/stopped for now out of the 12 I have in the ground so far. Have to finish the rest this wkd!
