I like it! It moves the space from traditional to artsy eclectic. If you're going to keep it consider a modern wing back in burnt orange or a danish modern inspired with a fun fabric like below. If you decide against the zebra, you can't go wrong with a Persian for versatility.

I would go with an area rug with a little of the colour of the chair and sofa in it.

Just a little and I would paint the walls a warm taupe. It works with everything. I would paint the ceiling the same as the walls. It will bring cohesion to the room.

Possible painting the mantle top would add some weight to the fireplace. Or maybe having a mantle top made from wood maybe the same colour value as the mirror.

I just noticed the white blades on your ceiling fan. Painting them out or exchanging them for another colour would also compliment the rest of the room.

Imzadi, definitly planning on painting the walls, have been looking for a neutral color that would also go into my kitichen area. Ceiling fan is the white color because I didn't won't it to be noticeable, painting ceiling my not be doable. I agree mantle also could use some sprucing up!

I would paint at least one of the walls in white and add a pale rug. IMHO your problem is that the yellow is too uniform all over the place. If you break that, it will be easier to break the brown over brown of the furniture and floor.

Spicy Hue is a yummy color. Glad you liked the chair. I really like some of the modern interpretations of the classics - the wingback is one of my favorites. My question is do you like the zebra rug in the space?

Brunie1, I agree the walls need painting. I've been looking at grey/beigy colors like SW Perfect Greige. This color would also extend into the kitchen, haven't found a color I'm ready to commit to yet. While I don't think every wall needs to have something on it, I feel I don't have enough or maybe just not the right pieces.

Manon, I do like the rug in the space, just not sure it it's the rug or the rest of the room. While the room looks very traditional I do love the "artsy electric" feel it give the room, I like different but not too out there, lol. I think I can live with it awhile and when I get tired of it I can definitly see this rug in the dining room with the Spicy Hue Walls!

lol @ Vikrant, yes that is his spot on the sofa. Everything else was so neutral I was going for the wow factor! Maybe a solid neutral color?

Bobbie, this is the first rug I've tired hoping to get new chairs soon. I could tryto pull the ones I have now in a bit. Its a hard room to arrange furniture in with all the door ways and fireplace, any suggestions? There is a half wall behind the sofa, see attached photo

houzredo - I feel your pain! I have three openings into my living room plus a fireplace. Which is weird, living in California there's not that much need for a fireplace; when I lived in New Jersey, I would have killed for one! But because of the many openings all my furniture "hugs" the walls, looks kind of like spin-art decorating (do you remember spin-art?).

I don't see anything wrong with your furniture arrangement, I think you've done the best you can with the space allowed. I just think a larger area rug, one that would touch base with as many pieces of the furniture as poosible, might bring it all in together.

A solid colored area rug - would that be a problem with your dog? Does the dog shed a lot? Mine does, and even though I have a patterned area rug I need to vacuum every day.

I do like the way you haven't tried to blend the fireplace and the tv. That is a daunting task and you've done it well.

The dog does shed so we are use to sweeping daily. If I went with a solid color I was thinking a lighter color since the dog is mostly white it wouldn't show as bad as it does on the dark hardwood, but sweeping and vacuuming is no problem.

Hoping to find two new chairs and ottmans, (been looking for two years, ugh!). Didn't think it would be so hard to find two neutral chairs to go with a brown leather sofa. I'll keep your suggestion about the furniture all touching in mind. I want my home to be cozy, inviting and comfortable.

Just want to confirm your instinct to go for a large light-colored area rug; it would provide contrast and lighten up the room, ground the furniture, and hide dog hair most effectively. We have a house full of orientals and kilims, and the rooms with the brighter and darker rugs show dog hair like crazy; the one room with a pale oriental doesn't show dog hair at all. Thank heavens that's our family room and where the dogs spend the most time. Even darker and multi-colored dogs usually have light undercoat hair that they shed, so lighter carpets are usually best for camouflage.

The image below is of carpet we recently put down in the bedrooms, something with these color might work better. It's the light one on this sample board.

Those carpets look beautiful for a bedroom! I think, however, something even lighter would be a better contrast against your dark floors and leather in the living room. An ivory or cream, oatmeal, stone, or taupe color (depending on whether you keep the walls yellow or repaint) would all lighten the room more than a medium gray.

When we bought a sectional for our family room we actually matched it to the color of our dogs' fur as it was the one sofa in the house we allow them to jump up on to snuggle with us. We are besotted dog owners indeed!

Wall color is an issue, trying to find a neutral color. Trying to find new chairs for living room first before I chose a paint color. Painting two bedroom this week in BM "Revere Pewter" I'm really liking it so far. Its has a taupey oatmeal color in my rooms, less gray than I expected. Found a fabulose pillow and curtains yesterday at TJ Max to go in the room!

Revere Pewter is one of my absolute favorite colors! Totally versatile. And your birdcage pillow is adorable--love the graphics and contrast.

Revere Pewter is one of those colours you can paint every room, and then your "stuff" becomes the star of the show, not the wall colour!! I love love love that colour!!

We have a great rug store, and when we moved into a house that is basically one huge open space downstairs, we spent a lot of time looking for a large rug to define our dining room. When we found one that we loved, we built our colors around that rug. My advise to you is to find your rug first. As you did with the zebra skin...keep an open mind and go for a range, modern, oriental, etc. Pick color if you want...it looks great against a dark floor. Then you can move to neutrals for your walls. Maybe you could find a tone on tone paper for the fireplace wall with sort of a subtle vertical pattern. It will enhance the ceiling's interesting characteristics.

I'm not a fan of big leaning mirrors on mantles (although I understand you may have just been experimenting to see if you really wanted a mirror up there at all). I'd prefer a big painting, or a beautiful textile piece.

I disagree with Revere Pewter. It would make your livingroom too severe and dark. IMHO you need a kind of white in at least some of the walls and a creamy-white carpet

I definitly like the rug, maybe just not for this room. The sofa and tv media is the only thing that must stay in the room, chair will be replace soon I hope.

I agree the mirror if not the best, took down a huge magnolia painting that I was tired of. What If I swapped the fleur de lis and the mirror?

@bruni1: Revere pewter severe??? Are we talking about the same color (see below)?
@houzredo: Some rug stores (usually the high end ones) allow you to take area rugs home overnight to try them out in your room. This is how we have bought all of our rugs, and sometimes we have brought home as many as 10 before finding the right one for the space. Other stores allow returns. I would be terrified to buy a rug without an approval or return option. Nothing looks the same in the store as in your house.

Hmmm....I think the fleur de lys is too small, BUT maybe you should look for a fleur de lys wall paper for that wall, matching the paint for the rest of the walls to one of the tones from the paper. I 'm still thinking tone on tone, and more contemporary leaning type of pattern. Then you could hang a more ornately dark framed mirror over the mantle (in a vertically orieneted oval shape...or maybe round?)

I, too, am a fan of that burnt orange chair.

Store has a return policy, check that out before buying..... it's for store credit which is fine too cause I shop the store often.

@uhoh I agree fleur de lis is too small. Once I decide on wall color love the idea of using fireplace wall as an accent wall, pop of color or wall paper or maybe some tone on tone stenciling the kind you see on pinterest. I think you just use the same color but in a gloss finish to make it stand out.

Keep in mind, if you can't find the perfect chair, then look for a second hand version with a shape you like, then have it reupholstered. Some chairs can even have their shapes tweaked, so a classic wing back can get a little more contemporary with some changes to its shape. A good upholsterer can work miracles!
And finding a great fabric in the inspiration colour will be easy!

Thanks Wow, that's a great looking chair! I was with a friend one day driving though a neighborhool close to work, she was in the process of building and was looking at window styles and shapes. I noticed this guy hauling two perfectly good wingback chairs out to the side of the road! We stopped and he said we could have them, score!! My friend said she would have never seen them, she was too busy looking a t windows. I let her have them since she thought she might use them in her new house, thats been months ago and no house yet. I may ask her about them if she not going to use them I could have them reupholstered. Since I was the one who made her stop and they wouldn't fit in her vehicle so I went and got mine and took them to her in-laws and hualed them up stairs for her, the least she could do is let me have them, lol. There was nothing wrong, just a little sign of wear and tear. This was one of the better neighborhoods in our area. Note to self, need to drive though good neighborhoods more often you never know what people throw out!

Worth trying in your home, just be sure they can be returned, and that you are not committed to buying something from the store. (not store credit)
I am a designer, but I dragged home 6-8 rugs for my own home before I found "the one"
I still prefer the one michegammemom found, but that is looking at a picture of a rug beside a screen shot of your room, so heck, who knows if it would work!
With rugs, treat them like art. If you love it, try it out!!

I would choose a couple of slipper chairs that you could use side by side or separately depending on your mood. You want something colorful like this example of lazy boy slipper chair.

I like the zebra carpet, it gives exotic look to the place since you already have exotic wood furniture that you can build on by adding other animal motives in lighter colors and for example bigger plants on each side of TV, wooden trim on ceiling, grass/bamboo blinds, brass bamboo occasional chair/side table etc.

If you on the other hand would like to keep it more contemporary and chic, you could add as suggested couple of times here a modern wing back chair in contrasting light color (lavender, burnt orange, ocre...) , some fancier chandelier, and put a bigger light beige rug to make the room lighter.

With this type of furniture you could go also more oriental with persian rugs, but I think this is not your style as you chose this zebra carpet.

In any case I think the room would profit from a lighter shade of walls, you could try a black/brown/sand/white scheme here, it would fit great as well.
