Very nice! How large is the one pictured in the center? It looks great in that drum pot, IMO.
I have one that is getting kinda scraggly - looks like you prune yours pretty hard. So, if you prune down a branch to no leaves, does it bud back (wow, deja vu on that question...)? Okay to prune now, or should I wait until spring?
The center one is in a 5in drum, and I just pruned the last one two days ago. It does bud back but I just trim to keep it tidy, I'm more interested in the root structure.
Would you believe I just potted the two with moss over the weekend? The moss grows on the north side of our property and I harvest it every year. It's precise placement ;^) that makes it look like it's been there for some time.
If you look at habitat photos of many of the S. African miniatures, there is abundant moss/ lichen where conditions are favorable. This gives a hint as to cultivation. Steady low-level moisture works well during the growing season for many of these. Heavy nocturnal fogs trickle along the rock surfaces into crevices and cracks that are the homes for some of our plants.
Ground moss adapts fast.Roof moss or moss off of trees can't handle the change.Ground moss seems to even do better than volunteer mosses.Ground moss is beefier.I get mine from under Liquidamber trees at the local park..It's almost as beefy as Orchid sphagnum. Just some advice for all the "Where can i get moss?" hobbyists.
