Around my pond I use a variety of things:
-daylilies, red maltese cross, and tall ornamental grasses as the backdrop to the smaller plants growing along the rocks (pond perimeter). One plant that provides shade for my pond is tansy. It is erect, with dark green foliage and ferny textured leaves. It's fragrant. It's grown mostly for its foliage but it also produces tiny yellow buttons for blooms. I like it because it isn't messy, it stays erect and in a clump, It's seeds don't make a mess in the pond.
I could recommend a few I have that may work:
husker red penstemon
red maltese cross
dianthus-3feet tall, clustered red/white/pink blooms
star thistle-centerea grows blue/green foliage in a 2x2 ball
plume poppy-grows 4-7 feet
