Alfalfa tea question

I'm attempting alfalfa tea for the first time this year. One would think it would be pretty self-explanatory, but I still have questions! I couldn't find alfalfa pellets but got my hands on alfalfa cubes. I placed 15 handfuls in my 32 g. trashcan about 2 weeks ago on an 80 deg. day. Since then the weather went south and has snowed and been altogether crummy. Instead of getting sediment on the bottom, I have lots floating on top and I don't believe it smells very bad at all. It does get white and foamy when I stir it though. This seems to be the opposite results of what I've read regarding this concoction. Does anyone know where I went wrong?
