I like dark wood floors as well. I think the dark espresso would look really good if the walls were a light neutral color

I think that light terracotta on the walls will cope with espresso floor

Whatever you think you want, please check the samples in your kitchen. My husband & I wanted dark wood, but what we liked in the shop was so dark in our lighting that we couldn't see any of the character of the wood. We had to choose a much lighter wood which we wouldn't have liked in the shop but is the stunning choice for our home.

Dark wood floors can look stunning and elegant, However, be prepared, they are a higher maintenance item than lighter wood floors. They show every piece of dust, lint and dirt. I love the wall color in olgahoney's example!

I would suggest medium stain hardwood floors for your fruitwood color cabinets. I personally do not have dark hardwood floors, but several discussions have mentioned the difficult upkeep of ebony colored floors.

Espresso floors look great however everything else around should lighten up. Definitely bring home some samples and paint some areas on the wall as well. See how it looks throughout the day. Natural light is very important in color selection.

But does an espresso floor go with light cabinets? i've only seen them with white cabinets ... afraid to take a risk and have it look bad

Maybe the best thing is to bring a sample of flooring home or bring a cabinet door into the flooring store and compare. They should be fine together if there is enough contrast between them. I have a dark walnut in my kitchen with maple cabinets and dark oak trim (from the 70's) and it works great. The walnut has a range of colors from light heartwood to dark wood so it combines nicely with the different wood finishes. Keep in mind as someone else said that crumbs really show up on that dark floor. Eating a piece of toast on the breakfast bar will require floor dusting after.

Espresso floors are hard to keep clean, dust and food partials show up no matter how clean you keep them, I had them in my showroom - never again, even though they are beautiful .....
