Mourning Doves are such lovely birds. And quite calm as long as you move quietly and not to closely. I have had fledglings walking around the garden some years also until they learn to fly away.

Doves are lovely and live in our garden, too.

When we were in France recently, a pair of doves were nesting and my husband started feeding them on the balcony. Within a day, they would watch through our windows and whenever I looked out, or opened, the French doors to the balcony, they came down to visit us. They tried walking into the apartment. The pigeons were mean to them, so we had to make sure we weren't attracting those guys.

Sorta off topic, but I saw a cardinal feeding a little brown bump of something in the orchard yesterday. I was walking my little senior pup and the cat always has to come with us. Well, I hurried ahead and scooped up the baby cardinal and placed he/she in the tall grass before Kitty spotted it. The baby made a big fuss and spread its wings to try and scare me, I felt bad. The adult hovered nearby so I'm sure it knew where it was.

Birds are vicious creatures. I think we all love doves so much because they are so much dumber than other birds, so they seem sweet to us.

My favorite bird, Attila the Hum, attacks everyone and everything that he feels might threaten his feeder.

Every morning I watch the mockingbird chase the warbler off the feeder, then the jay chases the mockingbird off, then the crow chases the jay. Nobody chases Attila.

I may be mistaken about this...but my personal experience with doves...if you successful play bed and breakfast to a pair of doves..they and the offspring will return next year for another birthing visit :)

Whenever I feed birds, I usually quickly have a flock of mourning doves at the feeder. If you want birds like mourning doves to come, just tear up some white bread and toss it on the ground near your feeder. They will find it and come (This is not my original idea...I read it in a book on attracting birds, and found out it worked extremely well.)

They really like cracked corn also. I put out lots of cracked corn with my birdseeed in the winter. I buy the cracked corn in 50 lb bags. It feeds the squirrels and morning dives all winter.

I found two young doves near my feet while weeding among my flowers and was quite surprised, though they took little notice of me. I'm glad to learn this is not unusual.
