The yard is looking much better!

Have you been considering native plants and grasses for your geographical location? They will need little to no water once they are established. Go to a local nursery ( not a national chain). They will know what plants will suit your needs.

Thank you for your suggestions. We are on well water so irrigation is not a problem, but what you mention makes sense. We need a plan for this portion of the yard, where we intend to have a fountain surrounded by different plants/trees and a seating area. The whole yard is surrounded by redwoods. Here is a picture of that area waiting for some inspiration.

That is a very nice space.
