Can I Eliminate Sawfly from Soil ?

Hello all.

Last year the leaves of one of my potted Chihuly roses were completely wiped out by sawfly larvae. I couldn't keep up with them. I would have needed to squish more than I could possibly keep up with.

I kept the rose in the garage over winter and I understand the little buggers will be in the soil. Is there a reasonable way to get rid of them before they start? I don't like to use harsh chemicals. I have two other ones. Will they have spread? I'm willing to throw this one or all three of them away and buy a new ones if the problem is going to be more trouble than it's worth.

No experience here but what if you bare rooted the roses, tossed the soil and re potted them in clean media?

Just a thought.

Duh SCG, obviously my brain isn't in full gardening mode yet. It's still frozen :)

I could maybe bare root them, hose them off really well, and repot, right?

No experience here either, but it sounds logical.

Several years back, I received a potted rose that already had a few of these buggers on the foliage and now I battle with them every year in my garden ... I think that once they get into your environment you have them for good :(
