Go for it! You got the system right and things shouldn't be a problem at all. Of course provide supplemental watering as they go into winter.

Spring versus Fall planting in colder climates I'd choose Spring anyday, but I certainly would plant the same things in Fall as well. In other words, I really don't think it matters.

Coniferfreak...I am thankful I have 20 acres. But my bank account is not quite as forgiving. ha ha We had one light frost a couple weeks ago. Not anything that stopped my perennials from blooming.

Dax...I usually try to plant in the Spring also. It is really late, but I got all of the conifers planted and watered in this evening. I will keep watering them every few days preparing them for Winter.

in my z5 .. i plant in spring and fall... October... when the trees lose their leaves .... not quite yet.. as we are still having almost 90 degree days ... but i am ready ... but when there is still 60 days or so before ground freeze

or in April .. just after the ground thaws ... and my fingers wont turn blue working the soil .... while there is still 60 days before the heat of summer ....

conifers grow roots during these times.. even if the upper is still dormant .... so they can start pumping water.. before the growth occurs ...

in my world.. that gives them 2 cool seasons... before the heat of next summer...

water deeply .. and then let almost dry between waterings.. which in fall might mean only one more drink before thxgiving ... mulch well ...

if really small.. and you have any rose cones.. feel free to cover them ... or just mulch well ...

just stick your finger in the soil .... and water when its dry 3 inches down ... do NOT drown them ... too much is worse than too little.. no matter how small ... they are still technically trees.. not annuals/perennials ...
