Don't look a gift Iris in the mouth.

My brother came for a visit today with a gift. A "Sorcerer's Triumph" japanese iris. He's also a plant person and just as bad as me for pushing zones, we know they are not hardy here. Any ideas on how to plant this so it get plenty or water? I don't have a pond or bog garden anymore. I was thinking of sinking a large nursery put to act as a mini-bog. Any way I would sure love some input.

What zone do they rate the "Sorcerer's Triumph" japanese iris at? Could you plant yours close to the house to get a higher zone? Are you right in Winnipeg to be a zone 3 or in the country somewhere?

I love the coloring on this iris. Where did he pick it up from?

I have a Picotte Wonder Japanese Iris that blooms and survives for me here on the south side of the house, under shade/part sun about 15 feet from a mature maple tree. Because of the tree the ground is not particularly wet, in fact it is just normal for moisture. The clump is slowly getting larger and this year has about 7 flower stalks on it, ready to open up any day now.

I have the Red Hot Poker which also is apparently a zone 5 just like the Japanese Iris you received. I wonder if you did as I do with the Red Hot Poker each winter...which is to bring them insideand put them into an unheated room in front of a window to let them go dormant...if that would work for you with your iris. Does anyone else in zone 2 or 3 do so to overwinter your zone 5 plants?

What about planting it right next to your house just like I plant my hyacinth bulbs right next to my house. The hyacinth are also a zone 5 or 6 I believe. You could sink a 7-up plastic bottle next to it to water with if you want to. I think Laurie has done so with some of her perennials that like a lot of water.

The tag rates it zone 4, Daves garden rates it zone 5. Anyway I planted it next to the house on the west side. I cover it this winter and hope. Thanks for the help.

Yes, like Brenda said, I have planted 2L pop bottles with holes in the bottom beside some plants. I did this mainly on the hot, dry south side of the house to get the plants going and also to get those roots going down to find water instead of just under the surface. But for a mini bog I've also just dug a large hole, maybe 18" in diameter and deep, and lined it with a garbage bag. Here I have chameleon plant and elephant ears growing by the pond. It's just a suggestion for your water loving iris.
