I had something similar happen numerous times in my yard and it was all due to rambunctious dogs. Is there a chance the canes took a blow from something and are broken?

I thought the same thing but they aren't broken. It didn't have a whole lot of dieback this year, but i did cut all of that off.

A few years ago, I had some canes on one of my Winnipeg Parks wilt and die. It could have been some sort of rose borer or I think thee is something called rose wilt disease. I just cut it out and everything has been fine since.

Thanks, Shillanorth. I'll probably just prune them off as well. Just made me wonder what was happening with it. Hope it doesn't affect any of my other roses!
