I don't water mine at all except for when it catches what bounces off the other plants nearby. The only thing that has killed my ice plant is when my neighbor's dog gave it a good "watering." It turned brown and died -- a huge clump of it last year. This spring, I broke off sprigs from the other plants to root and have replaced the dead clump. You can easily stick sprigs in moist soil to grow more.

You don't have to be careful with the sprigs... big, small, long, short sprigs will all root. Just keep the soil moist until they take hold.

Faye, If you are going to try to root these sprigs, you may want to do it in another area first and transplant. The reason is you will want to keep these sprigs in moist good soil to root. If you feel the already established plants are dying from too much water, then I don't think it would be wise to do rootings in the dry soil needed by the established plants.

I've found that iceplant will rot out in patches if the soil is not exceptionally well-drained. I have some that are planted in well-drained soil next to a dry laid stone patio and they've migrated happily into the rock dust of the stone patio. They actually prefer it to the soil. Also, they really don't care for mulch.

Mine will root in plain sand (the native soil here without amendment). But this wetter than usual spring and summer it has not performed very well. I haven't really noticed die off but it certainly hasn't bloomed as well as it has in previous years. I agree that it is one of the plants that needs very good drainage.
