I would have said willow, looks like northspruce know he's willows.

Great....my neighbor planted 10 of these all along the fence in their backyard. We share 1 side of fence with them. The side we share has three of these planted in a 10 ft area and 1 foot from the fence. Thanks for the ID. You guys know your stuff.

Does he know how big these are going to get? Here they are about 30' tall and nearly that wide.

I don't think they do...that is what I'm afraid of.

I've never really paid much attention but I think the ones I've seen around here aren't huge. They tend to be in competition with other shrubs and trees, in ditches and the edges of bush, though. Anyway, in spring you'll know for sure! ;)

On the positive side you just inherited half a tree for free! They are also hosts for the fritillary butterflies. I have 5 acres and want to plant one as a butterfly host tree but am scared it will eventually try and eat my house and yard!

If it's in town it could be bad news down the road,...
We have two at the shop, HUGE...must be over 40 years old and
every year we have to get somebody to clear/cutout the sure line.
Must be clay, ..don't think today anymore. Terribly brittle, in the wind it looses branches, constant clean up.

If I carry on the negatives the roots are moisture leeching SOB's. I have done lots of warranty work because of willows and I hope they get planted so I can work lol

Poplar and willow trees should be outlawed in residential area,..only good for park,..been saying this for the last 20 years or so but nobody listens.

Yes this is residential and small postage stamp lots....sigh. Oh well not much I can do.
