Spartan Spruce

Picea glauca X pungens. Anyone seen one of these? Developed at Michigan State University. Sounds like a good general landscape or forestry tree.

"...So why did they name it after a town in southern Greece?? ..."

Because they had to develop it on a Spartan budget ;-)

......and everything is Spartan at MSU!

"...So why did they name it after a town in southern Greece?? ..."

Hope that was in jest! Of course sparta was a great greek city-state long before being a 'town in greece.' C'mon man go rent 300. No idea why mediocre Michigan school co-opted name though......

Nothing spartan about setting your town on fire after winning a basketball game.

No - its spartan to set your opponents town on flame after winning a basketball game...

    ....

    THIS IS SPARTA!!!

...............Anyway, I take it noone has gotten a look at the tree then?!?

Ken, how 'bout you? There must be some in your neck of the woods.

    *cough*

This is as relevant as information I have come across, referring to the backcrosses other than the original cross itself. I donÂt know how useful it is but in the off chance it is, here is the info

    Spruce combination / Character response
(White x blue) x white (backcross)
    - Similar to white spruce in all measured characters.

(White x blue) x blue (backcross)
    - Similar to blue in 6-month, height, needle curvature, and 3-carene concentration.
    - Similar to white in needle serrations.
    - Intermediate in b-pinene concentration

Hey Panser - you must be one of those Michigan fans who did not attend Michigan - what is so mediocore about MSU??? Some people on here went to MSU so be careful about what you post....

'Tressel' would have been more appropriate name ;)

no ... no Spartans in my neck of the woods... we are of the opposing schools sphere of influence .. we are wolverines ... as in Univ of MI ....

as for the trees .. never heard of them ...

and as far as i know.. sparty is the mascot for MI state ... because they are warriors ... not because they are all Greek .... lol

I don't know much about MSU other than the above referenced tendency to riot after ball games. I shouldnt have said mediocre. Im sure its fine and as good as the rest of the big 10, the conference that can't count to 11 :)

Where I live our basketball team has won 4 world championships and not had a single post game riot, if this hybird spruce is a classy selection I suggest name should be "spurs" or "duncan"

My grandfather was the professor who developed the tree, and he named is Spartan Spruce as he was a professor at Michigan State University at the time. He passed away in the early 1990s. It is a beautiful tree and I wish they were mass produced.
