Working with off center light fixture

Junction box for an overhead light fixture is not centered and wondering if there any thing better out there then doing the ugly chain and hook swag? I already bought a pendant lamp which I like. Its over a dining table.
It is NOT possible to move the junction box.

That might depend on why the junction box can't be moved: is there a header, beam, or other important obstruction in the way? I don't know a thing about electric, I'm just curious and figure the answer might help others, too.

Tongue & groove ceiling paneling went up making it impossible to relocate without significant repairs at this point. I would rather not do a j box cover for the original ( cause then its obvious it was a mistake). I am okay with trying to tie it over to the right location, but any good ideas on that instead of using a hook and adding a chain to a rather modern pendant lamp.

Hi Mmonica, what about buying or creating a ceiling rose to cover the relocation of the box? You could make a cool detail out of it based on the style(s) you like.

Also fwiw, we've had great results using plunge cutters like the Fein tool for removing and replacing single boards in T&G, which isn't a lot of work. First plunge cut across the board which has the old box in, to mimic a short board length (at least 3ft long). Then plunge cut through the tongue and the board can be carefully pried out. Once you've relocated your box a new board can be easily installed (partial groove or tongue removed) without it looking like a patch. A great carpenter can make this work for you without too much trouble. If you have access to above the electrical relocation is even easier.

Steve is spot on. At least talk to a good carpenter before you decide.

What style is your light and furniture? I think there are some solutions depending on the look you're going for...

My master carpeter is my husband. who with his Fein tool, masters all :-) The issue is actually, 2-fold.. The first is the effort of making the repair and the second is that the wiring will not reach the proper location. This means new wiring needs to be run. That new wiring needs to wired to the switch. All of these = massive amount of work and we have a to-do list 45 miles long. It falls low on my husbands list. So I figured I would let peace prevail and see if there is a good work around.
Thanks for all your advice so far! The look is modern with twist of cape cod architectural details.

Hi Mmonica, if you're keeping the light fixture and don't want to/cannot relocate the box you may want to consider a more informal cable to support the light instead, perhaps something like this

Also, one last suggestion for the relocation of the box :) - if the existing wire isn't long enough, you can reverse the existing box in the ceiling to create a junction box thats accessible from above, and hidden from below. This way you can extend the wire to the new location.

What if the wire is running in the same joist cavity and from the direction you want to move it to. Has anyone looked?

That lamp is pretty cool actually. I am actually curious about the little black things for all the ropes. Does anyone know what they are? Can they be purchased separately ?

The current j box is not in the same joist and there is no opening above this room to move the wiring. The only option is installing another j box, and putting an accessible cover on the original. Its not a drywalled ceiling so it will stick out like a sore thumb.

Yes you can purchase the electrical cord in custom lengths from supply houses, some hardware stores etc, along with the fittings for each end. Rejuvenation Hardware has some great retro bulbs that work with these type of fixtures. http://www.rejuvenation.com/catalog/categories/lighting/bulbs/reproduction-bulbs
