If you're crazy, then you're in good company lol. I went ahead and removed the pine straw from my young overwintered cuttings. They were all trying to sprout and that mean ole' pine straw was hindering their progress. I was also eyeing some tomato plants at the big box store and I may do the same. Gotta' be ready to protect them though if the weather turns again. May plant some other veggies too.

Over on the "Winter Sowing" forum Trudi has good luck putting her tiny tomato seedlings in the ground and covering them with drinking water bottles that have the bottom cut off and the cover off too. Makes for a tiny cold frame.

I'm itching to get things going as well. I don't think it makes good sense, but then again, I'm not know for good sense. I've been hanging around the WS forum too, so I was thinking about the same thing as the bottle. With a larger plant you could use a 2 litler bottle, couldn't you?

BTW, they are really bold with planting the Winter Sown seedlings. They put them out with only their first "true" set of leaves... no matter the weather!

I know...this weather is tempting. Does anyone know if we are going to get any more freezing temperatures or is this spring?

OK everyone, I fly off to Cheyenne on Saaturday for a few days, and I believe we will have snow, snow and more snow. So, as you are all enjoying the spring weather here, think of me in my sweaters and big coat and boots! Looking forward to more planting when I get back

This is not Spring.

The dogwoods are not in full bloom.
The blackberries have not bloomed -- a single rare bloom in a sheltered place does not count.
The pecan trees are not leafing out. Pecans know when it's spring.
Ten days is a short forecast. There are three more weeks in March. Atlanta sometimes has an ice storm in late March.

You can put tomatoes in the ground, cover them when the inevitable frost comes one last time (as late as April 15 in the past) but they will not set fruit until the nighttime temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees.

It is not Spring. Not yet.

Suwanee, love the title of your post! And yes, it's too early and winter isn't over with yet....BUT, I'm right there with the rest of you, just dying to plant stuff. I bought a couple of tiny tomato plants at Wally World today and potted them up into larger containers (why pay $4.00+ a for a gal. pot for the same 0.94 tomato in a smaller pot that'll be the same size in a few weeks). Plus, the pieces I cut off when re-potting will root easily so more tomato plants...

I did plant about 3 flats of snap dragons today since I know they'll survive...

I love the Winter-Sowing method, but I've been doing it for awhile and in the past have killed some nice size seedlings because of the type of weather were having right now. It's going to get cold again before it's all over.....

Bmmalone, what is this "snow" you're talking about? Is that the white stuff that falls during winter in some states?

Just remember 4/15 is only an average frost free date. that means that 50% of years we don't have a frost after that date. So in my mind planting anything tender this early is not good sense. You not only ahve to worry about the frost that might kill it, but all those fluctuations in temperature really stress osme plants. Better to hold off on the tender annuals unless they are in really shelter areas or you are very good at coddling them.

So far my pecan trees have never lied to me. When they leaf out, spring is usually here. No budding yet. I will have to wait a bit longer.
