rhododendrons and winter sun?

I just planted a rhododendron (Nova Zembla) in our front yard, which is an east-facing slope. We have a lot of trees, which means that in the summer, it will get dappled morning sun and very little afternoon sun, but in the winter/early spring, it is in full sun till about 4pm.

After planting it, I read that rhododendrons need protection from winter sun. But, I read this on webpages from Northern states, and I'm wondering whether the same applies in our milder winters (or is the winter sun only a problem when winters get extremely cold?).

Does anyone have rhodos that are doing well in a similar site? I was planning a "glade" of rhododendrons in this area, but perhaps I need to re-think my plans!

Thank you.
