They will come back from the base of the plant - still may be too early. Generally you trim them when the danger of any freeze is past - they have hollow stems and if water gets in the stems and then freezes ... they won't make it.

Thank you for your information esh ga.... I should have known better to trim them when I did...I will keep checking the base of the plant for new growth.

I cut ours back in mid March. They are beginning now to show a tiny bit of green at their base. I'm a little surprised because they usually are the last thing to come up in our garden.

How far back do you trim them? This is the first year I've had them and they are just starting to come up from the base. Do I cut clip them as close to the base as possible?

No green at the base here. I also think its still a bit early.

I have them at several locations in town. In Buckhead they are growing well (about three inches now) on Northside Drive they aren't up yet (probably due to early tree foliage shade). In Marietta they have just begun to show some little green leaves at the base.

Caeebe, trim them to about two inches so you know where they are until they come up. That little remainder will disintegrate during the summer not to mention, become invisible quite quickly.

No green here yet either (Woodstock).

I'm just North of Marietta and have been wondering about my Lantana. (I'm a newbie). I planted them 4 years ago; they've never really grown en masse as I've seen elsewhere. Last year they greened but didn't flower, so I didn't trim them at all in hopes of better luck this year. I was pleased to find they are very green this week. What care and maintenance are required so they can grow and flourish?

They need full sun to flower - 6 or more hours per day.

Thanks Vroomp, I trimmed them this week and I noticed some green coming out of the stems about 2 inches from the ground. I ended up trimming them to about 3-4 inches to allow for any more green coming from the stems and not just the base. It is good to know that the dry stems will probably disintegrate too. This is the first year I have had plants in the ground (not just containers). It is exciting to see the plants growing from basically looking dead to vigorous for the first time.

I saw my miss huff poking it's head up this afternoon.

My lantana had some new leaves this morning.

You can not kill Miss Huff....I whack mine to the ground every Oct, and sure enough every year she comes back no matter if I want her to or not....and she grows big and tall!!!

I thought that lantana was an annual...is it a perennial in Georgia? I have two that I bought in large pots. I wasn't going to put them in the ground but I guess I will if they'll come back. I had to remove them from the back yard because my 1 yr old dachshund/jack russell mix had all but destroyed one within 15 minutes of planting. No new plants for me in my full sun back yard this year! Having to concentrate all my energies in the fully shaded front where the dogs don't go. Hastas are my new best friends!

mine is just now showing sign of life with a little green at base of stump. Could it be coming back this late or is this just a weed that I'm allowing to grow? I'm north of Atlanta.

Bellesandbeaus, our Miss Huff starts with a little green showing at the base of the stump, so yours is probably starting growth. I don't know if it is late for Miss Huff since mine was slow to start last year also. We have some of the gold (or yellow) lantanas that seem to always make it through winter, and I've never seen them show any new growth until June. In our yard anyway, may not be the same for others.
