October Glory Maple leaves wilting

Help....We planted last March in our new home of 1.5 years (backyard)a red bud tree and an October GLory Maple. Both planted same day. Both soil ammended for clay soil. The red bud is doing beautifully. The maple was late to get leaves, only about the lasr 5 weeks. Leaves finally bud and it looked to be doing great. Within the last two weeks, leaves began to look droopy. Now last week they started to shrivel up and die. The trunk and braches are very green when bark scraped. We have been watering regularly. This tree is about 8 feet tall. Today we raised the tree up, as someone told us that it may have been planted too deep. It was VERY wet in the hole, actually had standing water in the very bottom of the hole. We added soil to absorb the water. The root ball was very compacted and we tried to loosen the roots up. This tree was purchased in a container. What are we doing wrong?
