Sounds like Vaccinium corymbosum, highbush blueberry. A worthy large shrub/small tree, it can often have beautiful fall color as well as sometimes having reddish color on the new leaves.

Thanks you for your response. I think that it may be very close to highbush blueberry but looking at web info, there are some differences. The flowers are tiny (5mm max), the blooms came after the leaves and the specimens in my yard have 2-3 trunks rather than the true multitrunked ones that I found pictured. All of the ones that I have seen are in fairly deep woods and not at the edge as I would expect for sun-part shade lovers.

I will keep my eye out for the berries and report back.

If you can take a picture of just the leaves that might help. There are many members of the Vaccinium genus around here. I noticed recently that sparkleberry was blooming now, so that could be it (Vaccinium arboreum). It has beautiful glossy leaves.
