Sorry I don't know any negatives. I've only heard good things too. It is a small town. And I don't believe it's real close to anything that is very large. So, that might be a negative for some. I'm very sure the realtors can tell you what areas of town are considered the best/worst.

Thomasville is a fairly small town. Many retiress from up north have moved here. It is your typical small, post wal-mart town, in the south. The have one of the best farmers markets in the region, and O'neals lunch buffet is true southern food, although they tell me the farmers market restaurant is even better. The closest largest city is Tallahassee, FL and the next is Valdosta. Thomasville has a college, but if you are interested in school, you will be better served in Valdosta or Tallahassee. If you have chidren, I suggest you find the report cards on all schools before you buy any property, or you may find yourself in a district with a less that effective school district. Private schools here are Christian based. As for buying property, stay within Thomasville city limits or Thomas County. Outside of Thomasville, Lowndes county is your best bet. Brooks county is a no no i.e., # Barney, Barwick (part),Dixie, Morven, Pavo (part) and Quitman (County Seat). Schools in Brooks are well below national standards and the poverty rate is extremely high. They also have one of the lowest literacy rates in the nation. But if you are loking for livestock, Quitman in brooks county is the place. Brooks is just east of Thomas county. Thomasville is a nice town, I almost moved there, however, I found that the schools did not meet my expectations and we chose to live in Lowndes county (Valdosta) instead. But I know a few retiress that did move there and they love it. So it depends on what you do and what your plans are whether Thomasville is suited for you. The job market is viable, but still rooted in the who knows who, but jobs are still pretty easy to get in the area.

I was born and raised in T'ville. As far as I'm concerned it is a great place. I am a former teacher in both the city and county schools and my husband is the department head for the city high school, Thomasville High. The schools definitely DO meet high standards at both the city and the county. Having been on the inside at both I can tell you this for certain. If you want to e-mail me I will be glad to tell you all I know. Since this was originally in May you may be here already but if you see this.... I would definitely recommend this town to anyone! The town is about 20,000. Avid football community with many championships. We are about 30 miles from Tallahassee and 40 from Valdosta. The town is lovely and very historical. Before Florida opened up it was a resort town and many wealthy northeners built beautiful winter homes here. We are surrounded by plantations and have had many famous visitors. Jackie Kennedy came here to get away from it all shortly after President Kennedy was killed. The area has lots of trees and flowers. People are friendly and I can tell you that it is a good place to raise kids. You don't have to worry about them. The Y has great programs for all ages. We are the home of the Rose festival every April. Other than the way NightFolly felt about the schools, everything that was said is correct. I have a daughter that interprets for the deaf in Lowndes and the schools there are not much different. There is one private school here that is not a Christian school, Brookwood, and while it is a good school, with high standards, I wouldn't waste my money. The elite go there pretty much and it is easy to look really good if all you have are kids with money. However, my husband gets their students in high school a lot because people can get unhappy there pretty quickly. I have a hard time thinking of negatives. I always laugh and say that it's like a little Peyton Place because everybody knows everything. It can get irritating sometimes but then it's also nice -- sort of like the bar at Cheers where everybody knows your name. Depends on how you feel I guess. I love it here. I think the best advertisement for it is this: When my graduating class of 1976 left town they were ready to see the world. When they started raising kids many of them came back home. That says something in my personal opinion.
