A Newcomer's Insect question

I've been in the Snellville area for almost a year. I've experienced what I thought were the "normal" seasons of biting insects (mosquitoes, etc) until yesterday. I was surprised to hear that a house guest of mine was sitting on my front porch, waiting for a friend to pick him up, when he discovered that he had what he discribes as small, milky-white worms, all over his shirt and arms. The most shocking detail was that the worms on his arms were BITING or STINGING him. Unfortunately, he didn't take a photo of the insect(s), so I have no image to share. Is there anyone out there that's experienced this, or can shed some light as to what these things were? I come from Florida, and we had our share of weirdness when it comes to insects, but I've never heard of biting worms... Thanks in advance.
