Plants for window boxes

Ok, I splurged several years ago on 4 hay trough planters for each of the windows along the back of my house. Each year, I replace the cocoa liners after the birds tear them apart for their nests. The containers are small and requiring watering every day and my plants still look scraggly and tortured. Yet I remain committed to this elusive idea of lushly planted hay trough planters.

So, that said, does anyone have suggestions and experience for plants that work well in the smaller containers in the summer heat? Mine are in partial shade with strong afternoon sun. The nasturtium I planted as seed is doing ok and sweet potato vine seems to be making it.

Thanks,

Michele
