Green Thumb West on Davis Road is a really good nursery, also Nurseries Caroliniana in Edgefield is excellent but a little bit of a drive.

Daylillies, lantana, camelias, azaleas, hydrangeas etc are all staples here.

I would visit the extension downtown by the courthouse for more info. Also pick up Month by Month Gardening in Georgia by Walter Reeves ( or visit his website).

I'm in Augusta too. Really like Bedford Nursery (around Lake Olmstead, near the downtown) for annuals. Double B Plants out toward Grovetown on Wrightsboro road has been an excellent source for azaleas. Nurseries Caroliniana (previously mentioned) is a wonderful source for a number of annuals, shrubs and trees; some very unusual specimens.

Come September your daughter can take advantage of the next big nursery sale at McCorkles, out in Dearing. An excellent source for landscaping plants.

I think you will enjoy doing this. I'm originally from Illinois and it was an eye-opener when I moved down to Georgia 25+ years ago and learned that the gardening schedule is quite different from the midwest. Still blows me away that we can garden in the winter and that my annuals are still blooming way in December.

When is the big sale at McCorkle's? I have been hearing about how it is a good one but I dont know when it is.

To Gail & Suwanee75: I have just returned from my trip to my daughters new home near Grovetown (West Augusta area), what a delightful experience. We managed to visit both Double B Plant farm & Greenthumb West. She has her calender marked for the big sale at McCorkles. I was able to purchase and get planted 2 types of Azaleas, many annuals in pots and hanging baskets along with 3 confederate jasmine that we are hoping will cover a large trellis area in her back yard. I was so thrilled to have received your help and would have been stuck shopping the home center nurseries without your advise. Perhaps next trip (when gas is more available) I will venture over to Caroliniana Nurseries. She has a nice start to her landscape, hopefully it will not overwhelm her. We added a solar birdbath/fountain and two hummingbird feeders (visited within 15 minutes of installation) along with a couple birdfeeders and a birdhouse. WHEW!!! Alot of yardwork in just a few days time, but it was certainly enjoyable. Thanks again ladies for all your good help and advise. I hope to make a Georgia gardener of this Indiana girl with time!!

To get to the Double B...take Belair south; go over Interstate 20. Keep going until you hit Wrightsboro Road. Take a right on Wrightsboro Road. It's (roughly) a mile down on the left.

Green Thumb West...take Washington Road back into town. Cross over Bobby Jones. Turn right on Davis Road (you'll pass the K-Mart shopping mall on your right right before Davis Road). Green Thumb West is right there on your left.

I'm hitting Bedford this weekend.
