WHEN are you watering? often times when you water in the evening right after heavy heat, plants will draw up too much water and split... tomatoes do this frequently.

I've been careful with the watering; could it have been over fertilizing?

I can't answer that question... that's beyond my beginner's knowledge of growing gourds. :o) It is highly possible... We Americans do tend to over fertilize.
