Garlic NOT in red clay. AMEND, AMEND, AMEND. If red clay gets too wet, garlic will just rot in place. If red clay dries out like cement, garlic will just rot in place.

Not too much nitro, compost works excellently.

My garlic just came from the farmers market originally. I just broke it up and planted it and now save the best 4 heads from each harvest for re-planting. I could probably plant about 10 more!

I will have plenty of compost on hand by Oct. to AMEND the red stuff. Given mid Oct. planting, typically, when do you guess garlic would ready in the Athens area?

Hey Larry,
When the tops die down. Mine came out in April this year, you'd be a week or two later than us in my calculations. I live in the concrete heat zone of inner city Atlanta. We're usually quite warmer earlier.
Here's what GA Extension has to say "Depending on the area of Georgia, garlic will be ready to harvest from late May to mid July. When garlic is mature, leaf tops will begin to dry, discolor and bend towards the ground. Harvest the garlic when 1/3 to 1/2 of the leaves have died back in this manner. Use a fork to loosen the soil and facilitate lifting the bulbs, thus avoiding stem injury. This is especially important if you plan to braid the tops. If harvesting is delayed too long after the tops have died back, the bulbs may rot."
