I am north of Atlanta near Roswell. I have two kinds of lantana that are perennial for me: 'Miss Huff' and 'New Gold'. For both of these plants, the trick is to not prune the dead wood in the winter until the chance of last freeze is gone. If you trim them too early, water can get into the hollow stems and during the next freeze, the plant will freeze down into the roots and die. Despite treating other lantanas the same way, I have had no other types return from winter. We have some 'New Gold' at the elementary school that has returned 6 years in a row by following this practice.

Oh Thanks! I'll see if I can find some of those; I miss having lantana, but after having them as perennials, I didn't want to have to buy, replant, buy, replant.

Miss Huff gets huge in a season. It's easily a 4 foot tall bush by the end of the season and perhaps 3 feet wide. New Gold stays low and spreads wide. Miss Huff is not always easy to find, but Pike's is the place that I find it.

I'm not sure what type it is, perhaps new gold, but I put in a tray of lantana last summer. I cut it back in fall and left it in and covered it with pansies. Most of it came back strong. But last winter was mild.

Thanks for the advice. So I'm thinking that regardless of which I plant, I certainly need to cover it during the winter. I didn't do that with the ones I planted a couple of years ago...that might be part of the reason they didn't survive.

I do want to check Pikes for Miss Huff and New Gold! Of course, any excuse to drop into Pikes is a good excuse!
