The leaves and flowers of the Florida Anise(Illicium floridium) have been determined to be toxic to humans. Although there are references to the leaves being used in Asian cooking, the UGA lists it as a poisonous plant, with fatal consequences, if ingested in quanity. There is a herbal shop in Ohio that sells the star fruit of anise but I don't know its usage and I believe the liquor anisette is flavored with anise. Which type I don't know.
