I had a big pot a few years ago that was quite attractive.... everything in purples; it was very interesting with the various leaf textures and color variations:
Red Shiso -- which grew quite tall... I think Hopley's Purple Oregano would be good culinary substitute;
Magic Mountain Basil;
Purple Sage (the culinary one... Salvia officinalis ???? );
Silver Thyme.

Rosemary is a good choice

Along the herbs of Provance line, I've never seen anyone try at any of the local nurseries some ethnic pots of herbs. I always see the same parsley, oregano, sage, basil, etc. mix. I'm not sure how well it would work or sell but you could try a latin-flavored mix. Maybe a couple of hot pepper plants, cilantro, tomatillos, and whatever else might work. Or maybe an asian themed one, shiso, cilantro, thai basil, mizuna, shungiku, etc.

You get the idea. It might take some research but it would be different and interesting.

Hi - in my recent "research" on which herbs to grow, I saw a few combinations - some with nice pictures - here is a list that I had "cut and pasted"

French

Tarragon, Chervil, Parsley, Thyme, Rosemary

Italian

Basil, Marjoram, Rosemary, Oregano, Parsley

Mexican

Cilantro, Chiles, Mexican oregano

Greek

Oregano, Mint, Garlic, Dill

Salad

Arugula, Garlic, Fennel, Parsley

Favorites

Dill, Thyme, Sage, Chives

also one that was called Scarborough Fair

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

and on the ethnic flavours including veggies

Salsa garden:

Cilantro, garlic chives, roma tomato, jalepano pepper

I imagine from some answers that I got about planting combos that you would have to have nutrient dense soil and plan on watering alot for these - especially the Salsa garden

Those are quite helpful and I thank your for your ideas and research. I will be making all of these, and the English basket is, in fact, one I had thought of, as my family is English and those are traditional herbs used in our cooking. Also, the Latin culinary basket is quite a lovely idea as well. I have some herbs already planted: sweet marjoram, silvery sage, German chamomile, some Johnny Jump Ups, and some parsley and some chives. These are all just starting this week. I will get the peppers and basil started a little later. It has turned cold again in my area. Thanks again for all suggestions. I will post some pictures when they come up and the baskets are put together!
