potted thyme

I've had a potted thyme for a few months, and it is not yet dead. So I'm pretty proud of that. I'm growing it in a roughly 2:1:1 mixture of potting soil, pearlite, and fine gravel. Someone on this board advised me to try growing it in a combination of potting soil and bonsai mix, and that was the best approximation I could come up with.

However, the lower leaves are going brown, and the upper leaves were turning dark greeny purple. (It was more purple than this - I gave it a little high phosphorus fertilizer which seemed to help).

How much fertilizer should I be giving it and how often? I know that thyme doesn't need much, but I'm practically growing it in inert material here. Do I need a bigger pot?
