3 Pc weight and old PC conversion

Hi everybody, I canned 9 pints and 7 quarts of bean soup tonight and it was my maiden voyage with the 3 pc weight conversion to my ancient Magic Seal pressure canner from the 1950's. On this forum I read about a 3 pc weight set for the Presto canner as being the way to go rather then getting a gauge checked every year etc. My old canner is actually from Montgomery Wards, but similar to Maid of Honor from Sears, made by Presto. Now the new Presto's are an easy conversion to the 5-10-15 PSI weight set as the outlet in the lid is already set up for the rocking weight set-up for 15 lbs of pressure. The old canners have a larger diameter thread in the lid, but there is a outlet available that fits the old lid yet provides the newer style outlet that can utilize the std 15 lb weight or the 3 pc adjustable weight set. I took a picture of the set-up to help people understand the concept as it was confusing when I first read the description.

The picture above is my old canner with a PN 1058 outlet that is available from PC outlet and I also bought one on Ebay for $9 shipped from a seller called buy it now. ( No Affiliation) They have lots of canner parts and their shipping is reasonable, in no additional charge for the 2nd 3rd fourth item. The photo also shows my ancient never tested guage reading 11-12 lbs with the new 3 pc weight gently rocking. At my 600 ft above sea level the 2 pc weight should generate 11 lbs. The really nice thing was I did not have to watch the canner every minute. Once the weight rocked, I turned down the fire on a gas cook-top and the rocking weight took care of the 11-12 lb pressure. The bean soup that requires 60 minute pint times was much easier to deal with. I would highly recommend this conversion to anyone with an old PC and between presto and a mirror/All American style 3 position weight set, you can probably find an outlet that will work with your canner. Ease of operation and better safety is a great combination. I wanted to post this with pictures to clarify something that has been commented on a number of times in this forum. Thanks everyone for a great idea.

Larry
