Odd Hibiscus Pest

Hi:

(I've posted this to Arizona Gardening with no solid suggestions as to a pest ID. Thought those reading this forum might be able to help.)

At last, my Lipstick Hibiscus is starting to bloom again. Over this past week, I've found three buds (two almost ready to unfurl) pierced by holes. The holes are 1/4" in diameter and are bored completely through the middle of the bud, side to side. Examining the plant, I find no worm, slug, snail, aphid, beetle, or "bug" of any sort. Only a few of those all-over-the-place black gnats. Does anyone have any guesses as to what is eating my pretty baby?

Thanks for any help.

Zill
