First salad of the year last night from strictly home-grown ingredients!

Baby green romaine and baby chard leaves from inside.

Tiny broccoli side shoots from overwintered plants.

Red Oak leaf lettuce (overwintered).

Joi Choi (small Bok Choy type), also overwintered.

Yum!!!

Bring on Spring!

Anyone else eating this seasons plantings?

Deanna (who forgot to take a picture!)

Chives is all I have been able to harvest so far.

Dang it!! I forgot about chives! Could have had some last night!

Do you dry any for winter or eat yours fresh?

I'm completely envious!!!! Sounds delicious. I planted a few things in the garden a week ago but it has been super cold since so I'm guessing stuff rotted :(((( We'll see. Lori

I have some red leaf lettuce, chard in two colors, beet greens, celentro and some parsley. It's not sounding like too tasty a combination. I too need some chives. I do have some onions that I could trim up a bit for some extra flavor. I have to be careful not to cut too much off the onions, I'm saving them for later when they get big.

Our "spring" plantings are usually in October - bok choy, lettuce, cabbage, onion, garlic - so now are beginning to fade. The Bibb type lettuce was superb this year, but I planted too much - so many now getting a bit "milk" stage - but left them to see if they would re-seed - that would be nice, so wouldn't have to replant next fall.

The tomato seedlings - being hardened - were looking a bit pale, so hurried them into the ground after refreshing the soil. Wonder if I need to empty my planters and put in new growing medium sometime soon. So far, just refreshing seems to work fine.

Have a few peppers in also, and today will "do" picklers. Hopefully, I will get enough to satisfy my family's liking for those nice brine-type dills this year. Didn't get many last year.

In the meantime, I amused myself with pressure canning dried beans - pintos mainly, and a few blacks.

My pressure canner is finally in need of a new rubber ring -ordered "on-line" - a real hassle getting thru Presto's web site, but it's done.

The dried cherry tomatoes are almost gone - great hit in the salad dressing with olive oil, garlic and wine vinegar, with herbs.

Making yogurt and tried it in a ranch-type dressing with mayo, garlic and herbs - I left out any sweetener - honey or sugar for that purpose - good used like sour cream too.

I eat my chives fresh, they are delish chopped and sprinkled on cottage cheese or a potato.

I think I will dry some now that you mention it, I do have a food dehydrator.

    Oh, Deanna, I'm so jealous!

I planted peas on Sunday, which was a lovely afternoon, but like Lori have been hit by cold ever since. Several inches of snow, in fact --- yuck! It's supposed to be mid-forties and sunny for several days starting tomorrow, thank goodness, so maybe those peas can get a chance to germinate and I can get a chance to plant some lettuce, too.

A few hopeful very early signs --- the rhubarb is poking up (mine has been in a pot for 4 years, and BION seems quite happy there), the strawberries are greening up just a bit, and the thyme and lemon balm are showing sings of waking up.

But mostly my gardening is done indoors these days --- starting tomatoes, nurturing along the peppers I started several weeks ago. Feels like a real act of faith when there is snow on the ground, let me tell you!

Aren't freshly picked salads the best part of a meal? We have been enjoying them a lot, fresh arugula, mustards, all kinds of lettuces, radishes, carrots, beets (I like them raw, thinly sliced marinated in balsamic) and fresh sugar snaps too. We just vary the contents of the salads depending on the season, in august we have no lettuces but lots of tomatoes, peppers, green beans and cucumbers. We will be having lettuces for a little while longer, this year I made sure to plant regularly, so I have some baby lettuces coming up along my more mature ones.

I had my first salad from my CSA tonight. I got a good-sized bunch with a few different types of baby lettuce. Looked like green leaf, red oak leaf, romaine, and another one I couldn't name. For dressing I did lemon juice and olive oil with a dab of coarse dijon mustard to hold it together, and plenty of salt and pepper.

I also got a bunch of radishes, white and pink and fuschia and purple. They're delicious, mild and a little earthy.

The CSA I joined this year is a debit system where you get 10% off when you buy a pre-paid account. Today was the first day and I was really happy with what I got!
