Make sure your window boxes are getting enough water and not drying out during the day. Cutting the tips will make some herbs branch out... like basil and dill. Parsley and chives you should cut each stalk down to the base. Thyme just cut off what you need; and the same with sage and oregano.

Also, you said cut each stalk down to the base. Does this mean to cut the stem from the bottom?

I imagine I would also cut what I need for rosemary, right?

Is your window-box indoors or outdoors? Is it glassed-in?

The truth of the matter that the above-ground bits are a reflection of the below-ground bits. If the below-ground bits (the roots) are squashed and cramped, they won't be able to feed or drink properly, and the end result will be sick plants that just can't grow. Think how difficult it is for you to drink through a bent straw, and how difficult it would be for a child to grow if kept in a small box constantly.

I'm truly amazed that this assortment of plants has survived at all together. Mint on its own will spread aggressively; mint likes moist conditions - rosemary likes fairly dry conditions. The others like it somewhere in between. Mint does best in partial shade, the others like full sun. Basil likes a rich soil, the others prefer a poor soil. Honestly, your combination is a recipe for an early demise of all your plants!

You don't mention drainage at all.

Also, if you allow potting mix to dry out completely, it will become water-repellent.

Daisy, I always found it amazing what my DD could grow in a window box all jammed together. However, she did feed and water them daily, and the boxes themselves were never in the sun so didn't dry out so quickly.

basil = cut off any leaves/branches for what you want, this will make it fill-out;
mint = cut off what you want, the tops tastes the best;
parsley = cut these off at the bottom of the stem
oregano = cut off what you need
rosemary = cut off ends to help keep it full, and the ends taste best, but all can be used.

Also don't take more than 1/3 of the leaves off the plant. Plants need their leaves to survive and taking too much can harm the plant. With small plants, this means only tiny bits of herbs to use but with care the plants will get large and vigorous for you which means more harvests in the future.
