online comfrey source

Hi--everyone tells me 'don't buy comfrey! I've got comfrey!' But after 2 years haven't found anyone with comfrey! Where is reliable online source for comfrey, please!

I went thru the search engine, but didn't see any source.

Herbally yours,

Sherry

Too bad you don't live closer I've torn out comfrey and thrown it on the compost pile.

How could anyone not like comfrey?! It's a fantastic wildlife plant, the flowers attracting pollenating insects, while the leaves provide cover for invertabrate predators. It's lovely to look at, and grows well in sun or shade!

I've got one big bush that's been there around, and several smaller ones that have sprung from it.

Lemme look tommorrow, I might have one small enough I could dig it up and send it to you.

to all of you, thank you! I've got 3 folks who've promised me a clump this weekend . . . This is a nice website, think I'll start reading the 'herb' section regularly. Long ago, I had 2 or 3 herb gardens. Life took over, and I became a mom & other roles that go along with it. Last year was a pretty good first year for trying out salad garden, and kohl veggie plot. Will be trying herbs this year, but with all this rain, I wonder if they will drown. I know comfrey should be ok, since, stuff I planted years ago (elsewhere from where I live now) was on the downslope from where a lot of rain ran off during spring & summer sometimes.

    thanks again you guys!

    Does anyone have COMFREY ?

Growing it, to share, or available commercially?

I got mine a few years back from Richters. As I understand it, the problem that people have with comfrey spreading is mostly due to roots getting disturbed, roots getting broken, and little rootlets starting new plants. It's been likened to horseradish in its ability to sprout from little root pieces. The suggestion I've seen is to pick your location wisely for both and not to move them or dig around them once planted.

Beautiful plant, long blooming period, and I suspect the deer won't touch them (deer browsing is one of the big problems for gardeners in this area).

There are different spieces of comfrey and each presents its own invasiveness issues.
common comfrey-Symphytum officinale, which I grow, is a prolific producer of very fertile seeds. I have to deadhead mine at least twice a season to prevent seeds from ripening. Problem is, the plant is so beautiful in bloom and the flowers don't all mature at the same time so it is hard to decide when to deadhead. It has a deep taproot so even fairly young plants can't be pulled out very easily. They have to be dug out otherwise they will just come right back from the broken root, like a dandelion on steroids. Comfrey is so tough that even fairly mature plants can probably be transplanted successfully, unlike some other taprooted plants. My resident groundhog loves comfrey and regularly keeps one of my patches in check by eating it to the ground.
The other species I am not all that familiar with, but Sympytum tuberosum might be the one that spreads from roots, judging by its specific name. I think Richters has this one as well as S. uplandicum.

Would anyone be willing to send me start? I'd be glad to cover postage.

I had comfrey in my previous home but was unable to bring any with me when moving. Never had the problem of it taking over, but it was a very nice-sized bush.

    Thanks!!

I too am looking for comfrey. Specifically Bocking 14 Comfrey. Does anyone have any they'd be willing to send me?

I am also looking for a Comfrey plant or root. Does anyone have any extra? I would pay for shipping.

You can get Comfrey from Thompson & Morgan http://www.tmseeds.com/product/214.html online. I just ordered some seeds from them a few days ago.

Horizon Herbs, to add to the list.

I've found a couple places with seeds available, as well as several places with bocking 14 variety online. However, the price is prohibitively expensive, so was hoping someone here might have some they would send for postage.

I'm looking specifically for Bocking 14 as it is sterile and will not set viable seed, so will not become invasive, unlike the seeds, which can take over yards and gardens.
