Sometimes plants on my deck get munched by night-flying insects attracted by the lights of the house. Just an accident of being the wrong place at the wrong time. Plants located on the dark side of the deck don't get chewed. Maybe try moving your plant? Soon it will grow fast, and you'll forget the early damage.
