I do a little of each. I wintersow some and plant some in the ground after the last frost. I think it would be fine to plant in a pot now.

In Z10, you should be fine starting from seeds outdoors.

Sow seed in spring and for a late harvest, sow again in early summer. Seeds need light to germinate and they need to be fresh. Ideal sowing temperature is 20°C, and germination can be slow. Cover seeds up to 5mm and keep moist until seedlings emerge.

NB. The recommended temperature is for SOIL temperature, not air temperature. The only reason seeds are often sown indoors is that it's easier to regulate temperature indoors than outdoors.

I found an old package of Summer Savory seeds this spring (had to be at least 3 years old!) and thought, oh what the heck, so I took them out and made a row at the front of the herb bed and tossed the whole pack in, assuming that most would not germinate. They are coming up like crazy! I had to pull handfuls of them this morning (which I hated to do but had no choice.) I have planted SS in pots in prior years with great luck, also. So go ahead and get them in!

I seeded them directly in a pot outdoors. I see a few little sprouts coming up. I'm actually suprised. I thought they had a longer germination. Looks like it will work.
