Peppermint leaves are usually narrower and darker than spearmint leaves, which tend to be more rounded. The 'hairy' one is most likely probably spearmint.

You're unlikely to have peppermint at all, however. It doesn't grow from seed, but needs to be vegetatively propagated. Given that you've been sold an imposter already, it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that the hairy one is lemon balm!

Goodness knows what you've got instead, with about 1000 species of mint out there - but the issue of falsely labelling seeds and plants is a matter for rioting in the streets, IMO.

Well, then I guess I probably have two types of Miscellaneous Mint! At least both are starting to smell minty :) I guess that's what I get when I buy walmart gardens seeds. I thought it seamed strange that it warned on the back of the spearmint that it's a rampant grower but not on the peppermint.

And there's always the taste test...nibble on the leaves and you can probably distinguish between the two. But Daisy's right, those darn mints could be about anything (experiMINT, anyone?) But whatever kind they are you'll be happy to have them!
