Thanks for sharing! If it's within your budget, you might think about altering your furniture entirely. The two sofas look quite well loved and are fairly large for the space. If you can not budget for a new smaller sofa then you might think about a slipcover for one instead.

For layout, think about the following....remove one sofa all together. Relocate the remaining sofa so that it is facing the built in for the TV. Then, add a long low console table, or a bookshelf to the wall where the mirror is currently located and two small club swivel chairs on the opposite side of the sofa. This layout can also be accomplished if you leave the sofa along the wall as existing and remove the one facing it to replace it with two small swivel club chairs.

Your coffee table is slightly overscale for the room. You might think about replacing it with an ottoman for additional softness.

Think about using a bright floral or geometric print for your new room and add a splash of color to the walls. Paint is the least expensive addition to any room and packs the largest punch!

I agree with what has been written so far.

In addition, devote some real time to beefing up and improving your lighting scheme. The room will feel a lot more comfortable if you incorporate some table lamps (which will mean getting one or two side tables or the console table Cabell suggested). Ceiling light fixtures, when used on their own, put off wholly undesirable lighting. The addition of table lamps will improve the lighting and the feeling in the room. To get a side table into that room, one couch will, indeed, need to go.

Perhaps it might be nice to incorporate some attractive storage boxes on the lower level of your coffee table if you decide to keep it. Part of the trouble with the room is that there is so much stuff visible (on the built-in shelves) and so much out on the couches and the coffee table.

There is no small amount of furniture in there, I agree with everyone. Less is more. Or, perhaps in your case if you need all that seating, smaller is better. Perhaps you could find a sofa and love seat with less "cush" and more streamline.

Hi Bridget, Can you clarify what the space beyond the TV unit is? The peninsula type built-in really chops up your room and leaves the back of your TV screen exposed to the opposite side.
You might consider adding a low hutch type top to the existing built-in to conceal cables and the back of the screen. I would eliminate the sofa floating in the corridor to open up your seating area and give your coffee table some breathing space and I would add a small loveseat or chair and half where the two captain's chairs are presently. Make sure to include side tables and lamps because your room seems quite dark. I also suggest a light neutral paint to update what appears to be a faux finish. The sofa does look like it has seen better days, but if a replacement is not in the budget, a slip cover would give it a fresh look. I also like the color and pattern of this fun area rug.

I understand the need for comfort. I have 2 sofas in our main TV room. We both want to recline after a hard day's work. Can you just change it up and move one to where they create an L. with the other one facing the TV for a change. I would put a piece of artwork up where the mirror is with the blue of the couches in it. You might even want to use high definition photography - you could choose a place you love or want to go. It is very uplifting to see something beautiful on a daily basis. You could choose a one very large piece or several small ones in a collage with the same frames.

The space behind the TV is an open room with French doors to the outside. To the left of the cabinet there are 2 steps. The back of the cabinet is wide open. One wall of the other room is floor to ceiling built in shelves. One of the previous owners was a weaver and had the shelves built for her materials.

We are looking at new furniture and new lighting- the couch is well past it's best days. . I've been waiting for budgeting reasons and wanting to make sure we don't make a costly mistake. I took the picture without removing the clutter for a reminder of what I deal with on a daily basis and trying to figure out the best way to fix it.

Glad to hear you're planning on getting new furniture. If you provide some measurements of that area, I imagine several members of this forum could advise on what size couch(es) and tables to get when you're ready.

The usable space is 9 ft wide by 12 ft long. The room is right in the middle of the house. There is a bedroom door behind the floating couch and the other hallway leads to bathroom and bedrooms. The room behind the tv cabinet is used as an office/craft area. Thanks for your help- obviously we need it!

How about mounting the tv to the wall and getting a sectional?

If you are going to purchase furniture, I can recommend that Drexel is a great brand. Very comfortable and durable. Made in NC but they have stores that distribute it throughout the US. You can go on their website and look at the different styles. If you dont like what the store has on the floor, you can order special order their furniture with a large variety of fabrics.
