should have asked this In first post but does anyone know If Mint will take over horse radish? I'm going to plant some horse radish In my garden along with my mints. I have about 30 peppermint plants In the ground and I'm going to plant about 2 horse radish plants. NONE of them are In containers I have over 200 acre's so I hope they all spread the more the merrier!! But just wondering how horse radish would do against the mints.

Horseradish is pretty robust stuff. I've had it get completely covered up in weeds and still go right on so I doubt your mint will crowd it out. I have no idea how big a clump of horseradish will get but I've seen quite a few clumps over 3 feet wide. Of course if you let it get that big the older roots will be too woody to be useful in making the sauce.

My horseradish, planted 5 or so years ago, has been quite well-behaved. It has gotten bigger - as per normal perennial plant spread. That means all perennial plants pretty much get bigger and have some spread over time. But I've left my horseradish to get big. It was a tiny pipsqueek when I bought it and it is 'Variegata' which is a variegated cultivar. I always find variegated plants to be less vigorous but even so, I haven't moved it or fiddled with the surrounding plants overly much.

As opposed to a plot I know of that had horseradish growing there (probably for 100 years) and it had gotten rototilled. LOTS more horseradish sprouted. Quite a spread there.

Mint phase it? Nah. Horseradish has tall leaves.

FataMorgana

At GF's country house, horseradish springs up over an area of maybe half an acre, from an initial planting of just a couple of plants. Next to impossible to eradicate. Luckily, the pond is stocked with gefilte fish.
