overwintering herbs

Hi, it might be a little early to think about this, but I was wondering: What do you do to overwinter herbs that come back in the spring? I've got chives and pineapple mint, both in containers. Will they be okay in the containers? Do they need to be protected further? Do I divide them now or in the spring? Do I let the tops die out or do I cut them down before frost?

This is my first time having non-annual herbs, and I'd love to see them come back successfully.
