I use to have 30 feet each of Ouachita, Natchez and Kiowa.....I got rid of the first two as they were just not good on my soil and my sun.......that is just the way blackberries are. Soil matters and so does the sunlight. If they do not have full sun all day they just won't be as good as they could be. My Kiowas were decent and now have 90 feet of them. I have arranged to trade for 10 Tupi.....but I am curious where you found them available?

Once again, thanks for all the great Blueberry growing advice. I have found the Tupi Blackberry at 3 places: Berries Unlimited, Rolling River Nursery, and Boston Mountain Nursery. I have ordered from Berries Unlimited once and was pleased with the order but the price is much more per plant compared to Boston Mountain. Are your Kiowa berries sweet? I am still getting a few late Ouachita berries and they do taste better than the earlier berries. What have you found to be the best method of removing the old blackberry plants so you could put in the Kiowas? What is your preferred planting technique for bare root blackberries?

Yes the Kiowa are sweet but not as sweet as I think they should or could be. I grow a LOT of fruiting plants and some plants like the blackberries are not in the perfect spot but do get about 5 hours of sun. If they got 8 hours they would be even better I am sure.

I tore out the old plants and gave them to Floralcity Lou. Of course a lot of suckers keep popping up from the root fragments but because the Kiowa are thorny and the others are not it is easy to pull them out as they pop up.

The original soil was just sand and it was mulched heavily 4 feet wide and 12" thick with woodchips. I re-mulch it every year and by now the soil is pretty decent.
